On the back of this photo my father later wrote:
"After escaping the advancing Red Army and then evading the American Army unit which intended to hand over all the Balts (Latvians, Estonians and Lithuanians) to the Russians, we hid for 2 weeks in thick forests and lived like gypsies. There was an acute shortage of food and water.

In the picture, from left: my wife Elfrida, my oldest daughter Dzintra, my sister-in-law and my youngest daughter Maija still a baby in the pram."
