In 1964 a 15 acre lake was created to help drain the ground for Killingworth New Town, and almost straight away a boating clubhouse was built which is alongside a public car park. Several different groups still use this clubhouse and more use the lake and park, which is run by North Tyneside Council.

The sailing section was formed by a small group of retired men who were interested in modeling, both sailing, racing and building them.

The club became affiliated to the MYA, and is one of 27 clubs in the Northern District of the MYA.

For some years now, the club has raced only IOM (International One Metre) radio controlled model yachts. As the name suggests, the boats are 1 metre long, but the rules are formulated to allow home construction, which is something many of the club have done.

Non members have always been welcome to sail on the water at the same time as we sail (Wednesday & Saturday 1:30 - 4:00) and can sail in whatever class they want, but racing is currently limited to the IOM.
