Woolfee's (Early Mk 1) shrouds and chainplates   Rosa's (Mk 2) shrouds and chainplates

Woolfee's chain plates rely on the 4 bolts(in tension) seen here transmitting the forces to the SS bracket and the knee that it is bolted to, as shown below. On the plus side it is comparatively easy to keep any water out from getting into the boat.
 
Rosa's plate is all one piece (see below), and the load is transmitted well into the knee, but there is a problem with water getting into the balsa sandwich of the deck or straight into the hull itself.
 
The problem with keeping water out it that the plate at the top is not wide enough for the bolts to pass outside of the knee, so on one side the bolts were doing nothing, and nuts could not be attached. Even screws would have been more sensible, but ideally a wider plate on top.

Both types bolt the SS plate through the knee, which is a plywood kneed bonded to the side of the hull with many layers of chapped strand mat and resin.   I re-bedded the plate with Polyurethene mastic, and used long screws into the knee from on top to try to keep out water (with epoxy resin to make the attachment stronger). The bolts through the knee are more than substantial enough to take the load.
